LEAVING SCHOOL?

Want to continue playing Football?  YOU CAN!

Not in your School 1st XI?  Think you might not be good enough?  NOT A PROBLEM!  There are all standards of football out there.

This section of the website is aimed at assisting school leavers who want to continue playing football after school.  It may take a bit more effort to keep playing the game once you have finished school - but it's worth it if you love the game!

GOING TO UNIVERSITY?

If you are due to attend university, there are a number of options available to you. Most universities will run 2 or 3 University teams for men and women. Most of these teams will announce their trials through either a Freshers’ Fair, sports notice board or club website. These teams will often play in BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) competitions – leagues and cups with other university teams. Further information about BUCS can be found by visiting their website

Even if you don’t make the University teams, there will still be football available to you as most universities will have some form of “intra-mural” football which will often be organised according to Dorms or Halls, subjects or courses, or just by groups of people forming teams and playing.  Again information can be found in similar places. There are also initiatives such as Just Play which are run by some universities for those wanting informal “kickabouts” rather than playing in teams.  Information on Just Play can be found here.

UNIVERSITY IN THE USA

Obtaining a sports scholarship in the USA is becoming an increasingly appealing and realistic option for school leavers.  However, it is important that you are aware of the pitfalls as well as the attractions.  ISFA has appointed Ethos College as its International Opportunities Partner to advise on US scholarships and help players to find places at US Universities.  For further information, click here.

OLD BOYS’ FOOTBALL CLUBS

Many schools have Old Boys Football Clubs for former pupils.  Many of these clubs in the south-east of England play against each other in the Arthurian League.  There are several different divisions and most clubs run more than one team to cater for all standards of play.  The Arthur Dunn Cup is the Old Boys version of the Boodles ISFA Cup.

Club such as Old Carthusians and Old Etonians are former winners of the FA Cup (in the 1800s!)

For a list of ISFA Members School who have Old Boys’ Football Clubs, please scroll to the bottom of this page.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALL ALLIANCE

You don’t have to play for your school’s Old Boys Team.  There are thousands of amateur football clubs all over the country, catering for all standards.

If you live in London or the Home Counties, why not contact the Amateur Football Alliance, who run football competitions for amateur clubs, most of whom run several different teams.  The AFA also have a large number of affiliated female teams.

The AFA website has a “Find A Club Near You” section.

LIVING IN THE NORTH-WEST?

Old Boys Football Clubs are less common in the north of England – though the Old Boltonians, Old Mancunians and Bury Grammar School Old Boys are notable exceptions.  Many former pupils of independent schools play for the Liverpool Ramblers AFC, whose have two pitches at their own ground in Crosby.  They run several teams which cater for all standards of play and their fixture list includes a number of independent schools.

OTHER AREAS OF THE COUTNRY

If you are moving to a new area and looking to find out about the football opportunities available to you, you can always contact the local County Football Association who should be willing to assist. Their websites are found in the following way www.countyfa.com - for example Surrey is www.surreyfa.com whereas Northumberland is www.northumberlandfa.com.

ORGANISE YOUR OWN SMALL SIDED TEAM

Wherever you are – in work, at uni, etc. – why not form your own small-sided team with some of your own friends.  You can play together in 5-a-side leagues at Goals Centres all over the country.  All you need is for one of you to organise it.
