A week later than anticipated, due to the weather, The Grammar School at Leeds had done a fantastic job with their pitches to finally kicked off the spring bout of ISFA U11 Seven’s Tournaments, hosting the North East Regional qualifier.

The tournament was enjoyed by nine participating schools. The teams where split into two groups: one of five and one of four, with the top four progressing to the knockout stage.

In group A Hymers College started strong collecting maximum points from their first two games, however, they failed to maintain this form against Hill House and Dame Allan’s. After a first game draw against Hill House, Dame Allan’s found their form and topped the group after three solid wins. Hill House finished the group in second whilst Newcastle Castle School for Boys went through in fourth.

Group B saw some extremely tensed games with the majority finishing with only a one goal difference. The GS at Leeds topped the group after claiming the maximum 9 points. Despite a nervy start RGS Newcastle redeemed themselves to finish second in the group. Queen Ethleburga’s went through in third with 3 points and Lady Lane Park, progressed as fourth in the group.

In the quarter finals Lady Lane came to light and shocked group winners Dame Allan’s with a single goal. Queen Ethelburga’s and The GS at Leeds both put three past their opponents. All eyes were on Hymers and RGS Newcastle as the game was decided on penalties with Hymers eventually running out 9-8 winners. In the semi-finals Hymers converted a penalty which was enough to knockout Lady Lane. One goal for The GS at Leeds, against Queen Ethelburga’s was also enough to put them into the final. The final was an extremely exciting game, with opportunities for both Hymers and The GS at Leeds to take the lead. However, excellent defending and goalkeeping meant that the game remained at 0-0 after extra time. Penalties was to decide the fate of the North East finalists. Both teams comfortably converted their three penalties and it took a fine save from The GS at Leeds goalkeeper for The GS at Leeds to end the day undefeated. They can now look forward to the National Finals at St George’s Park.
