SURREY U11 SEVEN-A-SIDE CHAMPIONSHIP

SHREWSBURY HOUSE VICTORIOUS

Rokeby School once again hosted the Surrey regional U11 sevens tournament on a beautiful autumn day. There were 16 teams entered creating four groups of four with each team playing for a ranking in the “Round of 16” which started the knockout stages of the tournament.

Group ‘A’ was tight with very few goals scored. Edgeborough came out on top with six points, Aldro were a very close second followed by Aberdour then Hoe Bridge. Group ‘B’ saw Shrewsbury House claim maximum points. Parkside went through in second place followed by Newland House then Bishopsgate. In group ‘C’ Whitgift went undefeated to top the group, with King’s House second, Ravenscourt Park third and The Mall School fourth. Hosts, Rokeby, topped Group ‘D’ with seven points, Hall Grove were second on six points, followed by Falcons School for Boys then Oakfield Prep.

In the “round of 16”, Bishopgate manage to hold group winner Edgeborough to a goalless draw, and it was Edgeborough who were successful from the spot. Ravenscourt Park put three pass Hall Grove and Aberdour knocked out Parkside with a single goal. Aldro, Whitgift, King’s House and Rokeby also won their respective games to claim a quarter-final spot. In the quarter-finals Aldro stopped Whitgift’s undefeated run claiming a 2-1 victory. Edgeborough, Shrewsbury House and Rokeby also secured victories.

The semi-finals where set to be tense affairs. Edgeborugh replayed Aldro, both teams battled hard but could not be separated, meaning they would have to settle the score on penalties. Edgeborough came out on top, after some fine goalkeeping. Shrewsbury House managed to slot one pass Rokeby which was enough to see them into the final.

The final was an extremely exciting game that showcased the excellent football seen throughout the whole day. Shrewsbury House took the lead but Edgeborough maintained their composure and pulled the game back level with a fantastic goal at the far post. Despite numerous opportunities neither team could secure the win in normal time. Extra time was played and just as it looked to be going to penalties Shrewsbury House managed to find the back of the net and secure their title as Surrey Champions. Both teams will now have the experience of attending the National Finals at St. George’s Park in April 2018.
